The Velá de Santa Ana, better known as the Velá de Triana, is one of Seville's most beloved and oldest festivals. In 2025 it will be held from 21 to 26 July, filling the Triana neighbourhood with lanterns, music, the smell of grilled sardines, the sounds of sevillanas and, above all, plenty of life along the Guadalquivir.
The religious origins of the Velá date back to the 13th century, when the residents of the arrabal made pilgrimages to the Parish of Santa Ana. But it was in 1852 that the first official cucaña was organised in Seville, in front of the Palacio de San Telmo, to mark the birth of María Cristina de Orleans y Borbón. By 1910, this tradition had become part of the Velá de Santa Ana programme, turning it into one of its most anticipated moments. Since then, apart from a few interruptions during the Civil War, the Velá has been a must-attend event in the Seville summer.
The heart of the Velá beats between calle Betis, the Plaza del Altozano, the Paseo de la O and the Parish of Santa Ana. The whole area is transformed into a true spectacle of light, colour and joy.
Every afternoon, at 18:30, the traditional cucaña contest takes place: a greased pole launched from a barge over the Guadalquivir. Brave young people try to grab a flag at the end without falling into the water. There are cash prizes and categories for different ages.
Unlike other fairs, at the Velá the casetas are street-based and open to the public. No invitation is needed here: just the desire to have a good time, eat tapas, dance and share moments with friends, family or whoever you happen to meet.
Every night, music fills the stage on calle Betis with flamenco, sevillanas, performances by local artists and special tributes. This year highlights include the pregón by Rafa Almarcha (Siempre Así), a tribute to Rafael Riqueni, and nights dedicated to women in sevillanas and Triana musicians.
From sports competitions such as dominoes, petanque or fishing, to original contests like the beer-pouring tournament, not forgetting children's activities and a night regatta on the river.
Devotion remains present with the novena from 18 July, the recitation of the rosary, masses and a heartfelt awards ceremony honouring distinguished figures of the neighbourhood on the 26th.
Arrive early if you want a good spot to see the cucaña or to get a table at the casetas. Avoid driving: use public transport, a bike or simply walk. Sun protection and water: July in Seville is intense.
For everyone. Families, tourists, couples, older people and young people… the Velá has room for anyone who wants to join in the spirit of Triana, share its art and soak up its essence.
The Velá de Triana 2025 is not just a festival: it is a declaration of love for a neighbourhood, its people and its way of celebrating life. If you don't know it yet, this July you have an unmissable date.
