Discovering Lent in Seville

admin

Lent in Seville is a time marked by deep devotion and a rich cultural tradition that permeates every corner of the city. This period, which precedes Semana Santa, is an invitation to immerse yourself in a unique experience where faith, art and gastronomy intertwine to offer an unforgettable experience. Today, I'll take you on a tour of the most emblematic Lenten traditions in Seville and its typical dishes, which capture the essence of this very special time.

Preparations for Semana Santa by the Brotherhoods

During Lent, the Brotherhoods throw themselves into intense preparations for the Semana Santa processions. These include:

– Costaleros rehearsals: The costaleros are the men who carry the pasos (the structures on which the sacred images are placed to be paraded). They hold several rehearsals to ensure that moving the pasos during the processions is carried out with the solemnity and respect that tradition demands.

– Fittings and tunics: The nazarenos, members of the brotherhood who take part in the procession, try on the tunics and capirotes they will wear. Each brotherhood has distinctive colours and styles in its vestments, symbolising its unique identity.

– Spiritual retreats and confessions: Brotherhood members take part in spiritual retreats and confession sessions as spiritual preparation for Semana Santa, seeking personal and communal renewal in their faith.

– Quinarios and triduos: These are services dedicated to the brotherhood's titular images, held in the days leading up to Semana Santa. Quinarios last five days, and triduos three. These ceremonies include masses, prayers and moments of worship.

– Via Crucis: Some brotherhoods organise their own internal Via Crucis during Lent, walking through the streets near their parish or chapel. It is an act of piety that recalls Jesus' path to Calvary.

– Charitable works: Lent is also a time to step up works of charity. The brotherhoods organise and take part in activities aimed at helping those in need, such as food collections and visits to hospitals and nursing homes, among others.

– Exhibitions and concerts: Exhibitions of the brotherhood's regalia and artistic heritage are organised, as well as concerts of processional marches, which serve both for spiritual contemplation and to bring the tradition closer to the community.

These activities not only strengthen the faith and devotion among brotherhood members and the Sevillian community, but also keep alive the traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation. Lent in Seville, thanks to the deep involvement of the brotherhoods, becomes a time of reflection, preparation and intense anticipation of Semana Santa, a moment when the entire city transforms to relive the passion and resurrection of Christ.

LENTEN GASTRONOMY

The gastronomy of Lent in Seville is another of its great protagonists. During this time, tradition dictates the consumption of meatless dishes, giving rise to a variety of spectacular recipes, of which we highlight:

– Torrijas: Without a doubt, the dessert par excellence of Lent and Semana Santa. These slices of bread, soaked in milk or wine, dipped in egg, fried and drizzled with honey are a real temptation.

– Spinach with chickpeas: A simple but flavourful dish that combines these two humble pulses perfectly, seasoned with spices such as cumin and paprika, reflecting the influence of Arab cuisine in Seville.

– Cod with tomato: Cod is the star fish of Lent. Cooked in a homemade tomato sauce with garlic, onion and peppers, this dish is a classic that never misses from Sevillian tables during these dates.

– Potaje de vigilia: A comforting stew of chickpeas, spinach and cod, seasoned with chopped hard-boiled egg. This dish is an example of thrifty cooking, typical of Lent, which combines simple ingredients to create complex and delicious flavours.

Lent in Seville is a time to experience with all your senses. From its moving traditions to its exquisite gastronomy, every aspect of this season prepares the spirit and the palate for the arrival of Semana Santa, one of the most iconic and anticipated events of the year. If you have the chance to visit Seville during Lent, get ready to witness a celebration that will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on your heart.
