Brief history of the Carnival in Seville: a forgotten tradition
Nowadays, when we think of carnival in Andalusia, Cádiz takes all the spotlight. However, few people know that Seville once had one of the most important carnival celebrations in Spain until the early 20th century.
Seville's carnival dated back to medieval times, but it was in the 19th century that it reached its peak. During these festivities, the Plaza Nueva filled with lights, music and parades, and the city turned into a stage of masks and comparsas.
One of the most emblematic events was the Carnival triduum in the Royal Chapel of the Cathedral, where the seises danced and indulgences were granted to attendees. Seville lived the carnival with intensity, combining religious tradition with popular fun.
But at the end of the 19th century, the celebration began to decline. In 1891, the Seville City Council decided to restrict some carnival activities due to low participation and criticism from more conservative sectors of society. Finally, during Franco's dictatorship, the carnival was banned throughout Spain, and although Cádiz managed to revive it strongly in democracy, in Seville it never returned with the same intensity.
Despite this, the influence of the Cádiz carnival in Seville remains alive, with groups, peñas and events such as El Falla in Seville, which allow people to enjoy this festival without leaving the city.
