Rafa López was born in Dos Hermanas (Seville) in 1983. From the very beginning he felt a deep bond with his hometown and its flamenco culture. That land is in his DNA, although his artistic vision goes beyond the local and becomes a vibrant, contemporary, universal language. From there springs his curiosity and creative ambition, with firm roots and wings open to the world.
He trained in Seville: an artistic baccalaureate at the Escuela de Arte, followed by a Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Seville, and he completed his training with a Master's in Professional Illustration Techniques at the CEA in Seville in 2012.
From intimate beginnings to the international stage
Since starting his professional career in 2007, Rafa has overflowed with energy and talent: more than thirty solo exhibitions and over one hundred group shows in museums and galleries in Spain and abroad. Among the most recent highlights are:
- “Into the Pop” (2023) at Espacio Exzéntrico, Seville
- “Nocturnos de la Ventana” (2017) at Zet Gallery Dst, Braga (Portugal) —more than 100 works in a 800 m² space
- “Remakes & Homeworks” (2018) in Bulgaria
- “Tan volátil como pájaros sin fronteras de papel y trapo” (2018) in Seville
His work has also travelled to international fairs such as Art Revolution Taipei (Taiwan), exhibitions in Shanghai, Slovenia… and has even held a permanent space at Legacy Fine Art in Panama.
He has also been recognised on numerous occasions:
- XXXVI Bancaja Prize in Valencia
- First Prize at the X National Painting Competition “El Primero de Fariña” (Toro, Zamora)
- Painting awards from the Real Academia de BBAA de San Carlos de Valencia, in 2014 and 2015
Combining studio and street: mural work
Rafa also goes beyond the canvas: he has created monumental murals, such as the 600 m² ensemble at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide or a 40 m intervention on telecommunications antennas in Portugal.
About that experience, he has said he approaches them “as interventions that make a strong visual impact, transform the space and offer several layers for those who walk through it.
An artistic identity recognisable at a glance
Rafa often says “I know what I do and I know where I come from”. His language has a classical base, but it is impossible to pigeonhole: you recognise it straight away by his saturated palette, his defined black line and that explosive mix of styles.
Viewers see influences of comics, graffiti and pop art, but everything is fused with deep knowledge and a voice of his own.
“My reference has always been Michelangelo, but I also feel admiration for Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, Barceló, Saura… Spanish art has always been ahead of the rest of the world. It must be our sensibility and that light which is so ours.”
Intimate landscape and everyday visual journal
Although he works with portraiture, still life and abstraction, the genre that carries the weight of his evolution is the interpreted landscape, approached in a very personal way. He does not paint a specific place, but the set of sensations that place awakens in him: architecture, people, experiences, smell, light, colour… he mixes everything into an intense, fragmented and emotional image.
As the critics say:
“The transformative power his imagination imprints turns the particular into visual thoughts… he fits the elements together as if they had always been there; his drawings and colour declare it with vitality.” Njoy Magazine Legacy Fine Art
He has been described as an artist with “the freshness of urban art and baroque depth”. He mixes pop, graffiti, surrealism, abstraction, classical formalism and contemporary imagery… and makes it work as a visual narrative that speaks of experiences, emotions and visual memories.
Rafa López is more than a painter: he is a narrator of impressions, a manager of visual memory, a craftsman of colour and form who turned Dos Hermanas into his emotional laboratory and who has built a personal, recognisable universe.
His work has the pulse of the urban, the playfulness of pop, a classical undertone and a narrative that makes what is seen, what is lived and what is imagined converse. And it is this mix, so much his own, that we now bring to ARTLOVER: a space for you to discover Seville through Rafa's eyes. Corners, sensations, artists, stories… all filtered through his multicoloured gaze, his contemporary energy and that intimate dialogue between tradition and reinvention.
