Parque del Alamillo is Seville's largest natural space and one of the most valuable legacies of the 1992 World Expo. Created on the Isla de la Cartuja to house the Expo's sports facilities, its one hundred hectares of Mediterranean forest—stone pines, white poplars, eucalyptus, wild olives and mastic trees—are home to the Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Lake, as well as picnic areas, cycle lanes and perfectly maintained paths. The park's visual emblem is the Alamillo Bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava: a cable-stayed bridge whose 142-metre inclined mast has become one of the icons of 20th-century architecture in Spain.
