The Algarve is the south coast of Portugal and the closest international beach getaway to Seville. Faro is the gateway; from there, Tavira, Lagos or Sagres are less than an hour and a half away via the A-22 motorway.

What to do

  • Cidade Velha of Faro and the Ria Formosa
  • Praia da Marinha and the Benagil caves (by boat or kayak)
  • Lagos and the Ponta da Piedade
  • Tavira, with its Roman bridge and rooftops
  • Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern tip of Europe

If it rains

  • Capela dos Ossos, in the Carmo Church of Faro
  • Loulé Municipal Market
  • Faro Municipal Museum, in a former convent

Getting around and taxis

  • The car is the most practical way to explore the coast
  • The A-22 motorway has electronic tolls: find out before crossing the border
  • Regional trains between Algarve towns, taxis and ride-hailing apps

Tips

  • Remember: Portugal is one hour behind Seville
  • The Atlantic water is cool even in summer
  • Book boat trips to Benagil in advance during high season
